Dr. Kumar's principal research areas are molecular dynamics simulations of biological macromolecules (e.g. ion channels and membrane proteins) and their interaction with small molecules; as well as application of free energy calculations, computer-aided drug design, and machine learning techniques to solve biological problems.

Dr. Akhil Kumar aims to utilize his skills in bioinformatics and biotechnology to embrace new challenges in biological research and to contribute to the development of better therapeutics. His studies has resulted in numerous publications and were funded by multiple fellowships and awards, including SERB-National Postdoctoral Fellowship (2019), CSIR-SRF fellowship (2014), and MHRD-fellowship (2008).

Outside of PICompS, Dr. Kumar is appointed as a SERB-National Postdoctoral Fellow at Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru, India. He works on project titled "Development of a structure-based optimization algorithm to predict antimicrobial drug resistance mutations in protein".
