Dr. Alves is a scientist with experience in developing and applying methods in cheminformatics and molecular modeling to both pharmaceutical and environmental research. Currently, he is a Research Fellow at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS). His areas of interest are rare and neglected diseases, computational toxicology, computer-aided drug design, drug re-purposing, health informatics, data science, and cheminformatics. Additionally, Dr. Alves has have developed projects in health informatics, applying predictive modeling to identify relevant clinical features associated with patients' state of health.

In 2018, Dr. Alves was one of the Lush Prize Young Researcher awardees for his work on development of computational methods as an alternative to animal testing.
